Secondary School Competitions… While you might know one or two school competitions, most people do not know which competitions are open to students of secondary schools and which aren’t. This article seeks to list the secondary school competitions in Nigeria and how to go about registering for them.
Secondary School Competitions in Nigeria
1. National Spelling Bee Competition
National Spelling Bee Competition was founded to improve leadership and communication skills in kids from a very tender age. Participating students must be between the ages of 8 and 13 years of which the aim is to develop skills such as pronunciation, accurate use of words, improve on the students’ vocabulary stock and so much more.

2. Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) National Whizkids Competition
The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) National Whizkids Competition is organized by the National Information Technology for students in private and public secondary schools in Nigeria.

3. Cowbell Mathematics Competition
Cowbellpedia Mathematics Competition is the yearly mathematics competition for students between the ages of 10 and 18 old who are currently enrolled in private and public secondary schools in Nigeria.

4. CodeLagos
CodeLagos is focused at encouraging students below tertiary education level to take interest in computer programming and improve the technology in ways that would impact Lagos positively and Nigerian as a country.
CodeLagos seeks to Foster logical learning, deep thinking , programming or coding, improve the horizon of the participants and learn form their young ages to be problem solvers.
CodeLagos competition is held in accredited public and private primary and secondary schools in Lagos and other approved out-of-school centres which are currently 9 and located in centres such as Ipaja, Ikeja, Yaba, Isolo , Meiran, Onikan,Illupeju, Surulere and Ikorodu.
Application and Eligibility for CodeLagos Programme
If you are out of school and above 16 years old, you can register at the out-of-school centres listed above to learn and be training in Java and Python programming languages, and HTML and CSS which is targeted at web development.
5. National ICT Olympiad
The National ICT Olympiad is open to students in secondary schools in Nigeria and it is an annual event. It is also a mentorship program.
National ICT Olympiad Mentorship Programme
Participating students would be trained in the following:
- ICT skills
- Developing their presentation skills
- Business development skills
- Business development and accounting skills
Participants would be camping and would compete in the states and national finals.

6. InterswitchSPAK
InterswitchSPAK(SPAK means Speed, Precision, Accuracy and Knowledge) is a nation-wide competition with the goal of furthering the cause and improving the interest of Nigerian students in STEM subjects which begins in April every year.InterswitchSPAK is organized in a TV Quiz competition format where the best 81 students from all over the country participate in it.
There are prizes for winning students, teachers and their schools.

7. Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Senior Secondary School Students in Nigeria
Bishop Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for Senior Secondary School Students in Nigeria is an annual competition which is open from the 26th of March to 1st of June.
The competition is sponsored by Bishop (Dr.) Mike Okonkwo who is the Bishop presiding over The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM).

8. NNPC National Quiz Competition
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) is a yearly quiz competition for secondary school students and was begun in 2012.
The NNPC National Quiz Competition begins first, at the state level, and the winners at the zonal level progress to the zonal level which would mean zonal winners in each of the 6 geo-political zones in Nigeria. The zonal winners would compete against themselves at the grand finale.
At the NNPC National Quiz Competition grand finale, students representing the winning state would be awarded scholarships which would cover the cost of their tertiary education and it would be sponsored by the NNPC. They are many other mouth-watering prizes which would be give to the winning state, the first-runners up state and the second-runners up state.
NNPC National Quiz Competition is a part of the NNPC’s corporate social responsivbility and it is to further promote its goal of positively impacting the lives of Nigerians.
9. Technovation
Technovation is a yearly technological competition for girls from all parts of the world in which they have to develop mobile apps which would tackle or solve issues arising in their community. The Technovation competition started in 2010 and more than 3,000 girls from all over the world have competed in it from 28 countries.
Programming skill is not a given requirement and it is free for all girls to compete in. Recently, Nigeria came first with secondary school students from Anambra competing. Visit the official Technovation.
10. National Under-17 ICT Competition
The National Under-17 ICT Competition is an annual which is organized by New Horizons Nigeria with the goal of igniting and maintaining interests and acquiring skills in coding or programming, computer hardware skills and basic-level computer appreciation skills, and encouraging the development of ICT trainings in private and public schools in Nigeria.
