1. Changing the Guard at Buckingham Palace

Hanging the Guard, also called Guard Mounting, happens outside Buckingham Palace from around 10.45am and lasts around 45 minutes, with the definite handover taking place at 11am. The Buckingham Palace Old Guard forms up in the palace’s forecourt from 10.30am and is combined by the St James’s Palace Old Guard at around 10.45am. The New Guard then reaches from Wellington Barracks and takes over the duties of the Old Guard in a formal ceremony accompanied by music.

The guard that looks after Buckingham Palace are called The Queen’s Guard and is made up of soldiers on active duty from the Household Division’s Foot Guards. The guards are dressed in traditional red tunics and bearskin hats.

6. The Peter Pan Cup in Hyde Park

While children across London are excitedly waiting to unpack their presents, members of the Serpentine Swimming Club are arranging to swim their traditional 100-yard (91-metre) Christmas Day race.

Swimmers met in London’s Hyde Park on Christmas morning ever since 1864 to contest in the Christmas Day swim. The first Christmas Day swimming race was earned by H. Coulter. He won a gold medal, which became the routine prize for the winner.

7. J.M. Barrie and the Peter Pan Cup

Novelist J.M. Barrie gave the first Peter Pan Cup in 1904, the same year that his play Peter Pan made its entrance on the London stage. Like the fictional boy who never grew up, the race has taken on a legendary appeal.

8. Serpentine Swimming Club

The Serpentine Swimming Club is one of the first swimming clubs in the country. The club holds races every Saturday morning, with the distance depending on the temperature of the water.

9. The Race

The Peter Pan Cup is only open to members of the Serpentine Swimming Club who have qualified during the season. The icy Serpentine waters are commonly below 4C (40F) degrees in the winter, so swimmers must become adapted over a period of time.

The race on 25 December usually began at 9am and takes place on the south bank of the lake, close to the Serpentine Cafe. Spectators are welcome, but you’re advised to wrap up warm!

10. London New Year’s Eve Fireworks

The enormously popular London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks have been ticketed since 2014 to guarantee the event stays safe and fun for all.
