Joseph Mayer was a British goldsmith, antiquary and collector. He was a major contributor to the society. His personal library prints and manuscripts were dispersed through auction therefore his net worth remains unknown.

Family.
Joseph was born on 23rd February, 1803 at Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. His father was Samuel Mayer, a tanner and currier. Joseph died unmarried on 19th January, 1886 at Pennant House, Bebington, Cheshire.

His educational background is not stated.
Career.
Joseph settled in Liverpool at the age of 20 as a jeweler and goldsmith. His business was so successful that he also indulged his passion for collecting.
He devoted himself to a volunteer movement in 1860 and became captain of the Liverpool borough guard. He singlehandedly raised and clothed the corps of volunteers at Bebington, Cheshire.
He was president of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire from 1866 to 1869. Some of the works he contributed include:

- Liverpool Pottery.

In 1873, Joseph retired from business and after his death, his private library, manuscripts and prints were auctioned in 1887.
