TEXT OF ADDRESS BY MR. OLUTISE ISAAC ADENIPEKUN (FCAI, MNIM), HEAD OF THE NIGERIA NATIONAL OFFICE OF THE WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL (WAEC), AT A PRESS BRIEFING TO ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF THE RESULTS OF THE NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 WEST AFRICAN SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (WASSCE) PRIVATE ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2020 AT THE WAEC OFFICE, YABA, LAGOS

Gentlemen of the media, on behalf of the Management and staff of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), I welcome you all to this press briefing which is my first with you. Permit me to use this opportunity to express our deep appreciation to you all for your support and cooperation in our efforts at fulfilling the Council’s mandate to the nation.

As part of the efforts of the Council to continue to protect the integrity of its examinations, and to remain many steps ahead of perpetrators of examination malpractice, the Council, beginning with the November/December 2020 WASSCE, deployed another cutting-edge technology in the conduct of its examinations. This newly deployed technology is called “CredenceOne”.

It is the intersection of mobile communications and biometric technology. It is a mobile biometric identification and verification system, built on the Android Operating System. Using “CredenceOne” is as simple as using a mobile phone. It is used to initiate and complete the biometric verification of candidates’ fingerprints. The device is programmed to compare the scanned fingerprint template with the initial templates captured during registration and display the candidate’s details to check impersonation. The system also takes candidates’ attendance and automatically sends the records online to the remote central server for reporting. With this innovation, we can boldly say that WAEC, Nigeria now has its biometric fingerprint identification and verification system on a mobile device.

The November/December 2020 WASSCE was concluded on October 9, 2020, while Coordination of examiners and Marking of candidates’ scripts for the examination took place between October 29 and November 19, 2020 at 20 marking venues. The Council also undertook the electronic marking of the scripts of candidates in some subjects at two venues.

May I use this opportunity to express our profound gratitude to all the supervisors, invigilators, custodians, security agencies and other ad-hoc personnel for their commitment and dedication to duty during the conduct of the examination. I, equally, thank our Chief Examiners, Team Leaders, Assistant Examiners and Checkers for their dedication and commitment during the Coordination and Marking exercise.

Today, gentlemen of the media, I am glad to announce the release of the results of the November/December 2020 WASSCE for Private candidates in Nigeria.

A total of 237,154 candidates sat the examination, consisting of 124,512 male and 112,642 female candidates. This number included 37 visually challenged candidates. Out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 235,542 candidates, representing 99.32% have their results fully processed and released. 1,612 candidates, (representing 0.68%) have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors, traceable mainly to the candidates in the course of registration or writing the examination. Such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates have their results.

Of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 79,490 candidates, representing 33.51% obtained 6 credits and above; 113,573 candidates, representing 47.88% obtained 5 credits. In addition, 146,253 candidates, representing 61.67% obtained credits and above in 4 subjects, while 175,718 candidates, representing 74.09% obtained credits and above in 3 subjects. A total of 200,304 candidates (84.46%) obtained credits and above in 2 subjects.

Furthermore, the results of 28,768 candidates, representing 12.13%, are being withheld for further investigation in connection with various cases of examination malpractice. The reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of the Council for consideration. The Committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates in due course.

Candidates in the examination will be able to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org within the next 24 hours.

Gentlemen of the media, I owe it as a duty and responsibility to commend the staff of the Council, for their dedication to duty. This contributed immensely to the successes recorded during the conduct of the examination, marking of scripts and processing of the results of the November/December 2020 WASSCE (Private).
